The Effects of Divorce on a Family Unit

March 1, 2023 By Carmen Te

People who get married don’t always want to stay together forever. Even if they have the best intentions at the beginning, many marriages end up in separation and divorce. And the effects of that divorce on the family unit can be very dramatic. It is up to the people involved to try to create the best situation possible after it’s all done though.

So what are some of these effects, and what can be done about them to try to smooth the process over? There are the visible emotional effects of divorce on a family unit, especially when children are involved. Adults and parents have to work with the legal system to mitigate some of the legal and financial risks involved in a divorce. Then there are the matters of child support and child custody that often create ripples through a family’s social fabric.

Emotional Effects

When it comes to the emotional effects of a divorce on a family, it often comes down to the ages of the people involved and if the divorce is amicable or not. If two people agree that getting a divorce is the best idea, the emotional effects are usually less severe than if only one of the partners wants to separate. There is also the matter of if one of the partners is interested in having a relationship with someone else right away.

Working with the Legal System

In a divorce, the parties who are separating should each contact divorce lawyers so that their interests are served appropriately. Even if it is an amicable divorce, having the legal system involved will ensure that things go more smoothly than if they were not present. There are contracts to sign, property to be distributed, names to be changed, bank accounts to be separated, and many other things. A good divorce attorney on each side of the equation will make sure all of these things happen as they need to.

Child Support

Getting child support money is another huge aspect of a divorce that can have an effect on the family unit. If one of the parents involved in divorce makes a lot more money than the other, then they will be expected to provide child support payments. But because living arrangements in social situations will also change, a lot of different financial adaptations have to coincide.

Custody Battles

Something that can be a dark cloud over many divorces is a custody battle. Children of any ages can be affected drastically by the separation of their parents, especially if they are younger and don’t understand the adult issues at play. And then parents can be very possessive about their time with children, and that leads to a struggle where the emotional needs of the children are not prioritized over the emotional needs of the parents. Being logical and rational about custody battles helps everyone in the end, even if it’s a sensitive situation.
