Tips for Educating Your Children in Singapore

May 30, 2023 By Ina

Education is crucial to life, no matter where in the world you live.  If you’re new to Singapore or have a child that is just about ready to start going to school, then you want to know the full extent of your options.

Everyone wants the best education possible for their child, and Singapore is no exception to the rule.  Take a moment now to check out a few helpful tips that will help you get your kid started on the path to learning in the great country of Singapore.

Understanding the basics in Singapore education

Singapore has an excellent educational system.  The Ministry of Education oversees learning in the country.  They set educational standards, the mandated school year, holidays, and other aspects of Singapore’s education system.

Currently, Singapore students learn according to a “streaming” system that caters to the particular student’s strengths.  Kids are in primary school for six years, and secondary school lasts for four years.  After that, kids enter junior college to prepare for their time in university or vocational school.

Public versus private school

Curriculum, class size, and cost are the three main differences between public and private schools in Singapore.  Private schools are not required to follow a standardized curriculum, while public schools are regulated with GCE-O levels and Normal-level exams.

Classes in public schools average around 32 students per teacher, and private schools average around 24 students in each classroom.  However, the cost is quite different.  Private schools are able to set their own fees, and they’re always more than the cost of public institutions.

Opportunities for home tutoring

The educational standards in Singapore are no joke, and it can be difficult at times for students to keep up with it all.  If you find that your kid is having trouble with their education, hiring a home tutor in Singapore is easy.  Give your student the best shot at success with every educational supplement available.

Homeschooling kids in Singapore

Homeschooling in Singapore has only been a legal thing for the past decade, but you are now free to take your child’s education in your own hands should you choose to take on the challenge.  However, homeschoolers are not free of educational standards.

Kids who are homeschooled in Singapore must still sit for standardized tests, and they are required to meet certain benchmarks along the way.  The Primary School Leaving Examination (or PSLE) will still decide whether or not your child is fit to progress in their education.

Higher education opportunities

Going to college in Singapore is a standard course of life for many students.  Singapore higher education is well-known at the global level for its excellence.  There’s no doubt that your student will receive a quality education in this country.
