One of the most challenging situations that you can run into as a person is if a family member is struggling with an addiction. You can’t just leave them to the sharks because they are your family. But interfering in their lives may feel to them like you are overstepping your boundaries. It can be very complicated figuring out what actions need to come from you.
Currently, there is the opioid crisis worry about. And then lots of families have a history of alcoholism. Then there are behavioral addictions like when people become caught up in gambling. And then there are occasions when a family member may be either addicted to work or addicted to some pleasurable activity, in which case their life balance gets all out of whack.
The Opioid Crisis
There’s a tremendous amount of focus in the world right now on containing the opioid crisis. Some bad decisions by the pharmaceutical industries along with the government have led to an enormous amount of people becoming addicted to painkillers. Whereas it is straightforward to get prescriptions for these drugs, it is tough to get off of them once your body becomes used to them. If your family members are caught in the strap, you need to get them help now.
As long as alcohol has been around, there have been problems with alcoholism. And though many alcoholics have their behavior under control, there are also many people who need help from their family to get over destructive actions that they may be pursuing. You can see family members lose jobs, relationships, and even children if they don’t get their alcohol have it under control. So it’s up to you to decide what your responsibility is concerning getting them the help they need.
Behavioral addictions can also occur all the way up and down your generational family chains. If you’ve ever had a family member who is addicted to gambling, then you know how destructive that convey. People can lose an incredible amount of money in a very short time, and then those family members will come looking for help. It’s better for you to get them out of gambling before this kind of tension occurs.
Work and Play Balance
Though it may operate slightly outside of the realm of a typical addiction, whenever a family member can’t figure out how to balance work and play, it becomes an issue for the entire family. Too much time spent working, or too much time spent chasing after pleasurable activities are both disruptive. If you see a family member who is out of balance, it is crucial that you bring this to their awareness, because they may not even know that it has become an issue.
