Books, books and more books. After my children were about a year old and no longer felt compelled to chew on paper, I made sure that they always had stacks of books to look at. And action figures. There were a lot of Pooh-meets-Teletubbies-meets-Hercules scripts that I overheard. As teens, they never really watch any television at all!

I think that it's our responsibility as adults to get kids active. We have to foster a love of outdoors, creative play, and social games. They will take to it like a duck to water, but if we don't make it happen, it might not on its own. Here's an article related to this issue http://growingupwell.org/2010/02/10/get-out-and-play/

Great ideas! We definitely do the stickers and the sock matching. The other thing they seem to love are the foam items (frames, etc) and stickers you can put on them (found them @ a craft store & were fairly cheap). thanks for posting this!

Junk Modelling. Just get a load of stuff out of the recyling bin like, small boxes, cardboard, tubes, etc. Then get some paper, glue and scissors and let them create their own wonderful models. My children have always loved making things, it really stimulates their imagination and is very easy to prepare and supervise.

I totally agree. I think it is awful the way some parents try to keep their kids quiet by using the TV. I think that children need a variety of things to stimulate them. Stickers are a great idea by the way! I used to love them when I was a little girl.
